Parental Rights in Islam
The biggest right over us is that of Allah (swt).
Faith and obedience to Him are our first and foremost duties of these responsibilities of domestic life.
Fulfillment of these responsibilities is a social need as part of the religious duties.
After the above responsibilities, it boils down to the family life which parents are entitled to the highest place and foremost rights.
This can be substantiated by going through the following verses from the Koran.
"Your lord, Allah has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents whether one or both of them attain old age in your life. Say not to them a word of contempt nor repel them but address them in terms of honour and out of kindness lower to them the wing of humility and say," My lord bestow on both of them Your mercy as the cherished me in my childhood." (17:23-24)
The above verses can be interpreted :
- Parents' rights are next to the rights of Allah (swt) in Islam.
- When parents become old, their temperament is changed. They may become easily irritable and short tempered
due to their age. Children should show considerable patience and magnanimity for their ageing parents.
- Parents should be respected and revered throughout all stages of their ages. Particularly when they are old and become
persistent, nagging and critical. The children should all more submissive and tolerant and should always keep in mind the related
verses from the Koran.
- The children should adopt attitude of humbleness, politeness and obedience for their parents. They should readily carry out the orders of parents and also feel comforted by doing so.
- We should recall those days of infancy when we were totally dependent on our parents. During that period we were weak and in need of help from the parents to survive. During that time, our parents nourished us with love and affection bearing all sorts of hardships.
They felt happy when we were happy and became restless when we were slightly harmed. We as children should always have these memories fresh in mind and pray to Allah(swt) to be merciful and kind to our parents in their old age as they had been considerate and kind to their own children in their hour of needs.
Importance of parents
Once a man questioned Prophet about the rights of parents upon their children.
He replied that " the parents are the Heaven OR Hell for their children." (ibn-e-majah, mishkat)
It can be interpreted that, one clearly understands in the point of view of the hereafter, he can earn an abode in Heaven by keep the parents happy.
On another hand, he can be a deserving person for Hell if he makes them unhappy by his misbehavior.
"The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of father and the displeasure of Allah lies in the displeasure of father." (tirmizi, hakim)
Nobody can get the pleasure of Allah(swt) without pleasing the parents. One who earns the pleasure of the parents pleases Allah(swt). One who displease the parents may not be saved from His wrath. Both the things are interdependent.
"Go back home and serve her as Heaven was under her feet" told by The prophet to a young man who wanted to participate in the war with him when the prophet realize that the young man still has his living mother.
From this hadith, weknow that mothers must be highly respected, treated politeness and submission and served selflessly by those who want to deliverance on the day of judgement.
The 1st hadith mentioned about father, established the importance of obedience of father while the hadith mentioned about mother, established the worth of obedience to mother.

LAUNCH OF SHOP @ AH XUAN
My 1st spree blog shop on islamic books and products is officially launched today.
GEMS @ AH XUAN
Yipees! Alhamduillah.
Many times, we are ignorant of the fact that ISLAM is a dynamic religion and is a way of life. We fall short of the expectations of a muslim.
Seeking knowledge in Islam will also increase our iman (faith) as we will know who are we praying to, why we pray, what are the examplary characters of historical islamic figures, and what it takes to be a muslim in this social society.
I hope this shop will grow and able to help brothers and sisters in Singapore to seek for knowledge, like what our prophet said, “Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave”.
Inshallah. :) If there is any enquiries on other islamic products, please let me know. :)

Why Hijab and Modest clothing?

The simple reasons why muslimahs wear modest clothing and hijab are,
i) protect ourselves from men (who are not our husbands or fathers, or men who are molesting us with their eyes, haha),
ii) to distinguish ourself as muslimahs,
iii)obey Allah's Commands.
Islam gives guidance about all aspects of life including the matters of public decency. Islam did not imply fixed standards on how you should wear as long as the dress code fulfilled the following requirements.
Islam has two sources for guidance and rulings: the Qur'an which is considered to be the revealed word of Allah, and the Hadith or traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, who serves as a human role model and guide.
1st Requirement: The first bit of guidance given in Islam describes the parts of the body which must be covered in public.
For women: In general, standards of modesty call for a woman to cover her body, particularly her chest. The Qur'an calls for women to "draw their coverings over their chests," and the Prophet Muhammad instructed believing women to cover their bodies except for their face and hands. Most scholars interpret this to require headcoverings for women. Some Muslim women cover the entire body, including the face and/or hands.
For men: The minimum amount to be covered is between the navel and the knee.
2nd Requirement: Looseness: Islam also guides that clothing must be loose enough so as not to outline or distinguish the shape of the body. Skin-tight, body-hugging clothes are out, for both men and women. When in public, some women wear a cloak over their personal clothing as a convenient way to "hide their curves." In many predominantly Muslim countries, men's traditional dress is somewhat like a loose robe, covering from the neck to the ankles.
3rd Requirement: Thickness: The Prophet Muhammad once warned that in later generations, there would be people "who are dressed yet naked."
See-through clothing is not modest, for either men or women. The clothing must be thick enough so that the color of the skin it covers is not visible, nor the shape of the body underneath. The attire should not be form fitting, sheer or so eye-catching as to attract undue attention or reveal the shape of the body.
4th Requirement: Overall appearance: The overall appearance of a person should be dignified and modest. Shiny, flashy clothing may technically meet the above requirements, but defeat the purpose of overall modesty.
5th Requirement: Not imitating others: Islam encourages people to be proud of who they are. Muslims should look like Muslims, and not like mere imitations of people of other faiths around them. Women should be proud of their femininity and not dress like men. And men should be proud of their masculinity and not try to imitate women in their dress.
For this reason, Muslim men are forbidden from wearing gold or silk, as these are considered feminine accessories.
6th Requirement: Decent but not flashy: The Qur'an describes that clothing is meant to cover our private areas, and be an adornment (Qur'an 7:26). Clothing worn by Muslims should be clean and decent, neither excessively fancy nor ragged. One should not dress in order to gain the admiration or sympathy of others.
Beyond the Clothing: Behaviors and Manners: Islamic clothing is but one aspect of modesty. More importantly, one must be modest in behavior, manners, speech and appearance in public. Dress is only one aspect of the total being, and merely reflects what is present on the inside of a person's heart.
Dress requirements are not meant to be restrictive for either men or women, and most Muslims who wear modest dress do not find it impractical. Many people continue with their activities in all levels and walks of life.
In the Quran, Allah states: "Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty...And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and adornments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers...(a list of exceptions)" [Chapter 24, verses 30-31]
Also, "O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons...that they should be known and not molested." [Chapter 33, verse 59]
