Singapore raises swine flu pandemic alert from yellow to orange

SINGAPORE: Singapore raises its pandemic alert from yellow to orange on Thursday even though there are no human cases of Mexican swine flu in Singapore.

The Health Ministry (MOH) said it is upgrading its Disease Outbreak Response System Alert as there is a real possibility that such cases may surface in Singapore and the country must be prepared at all fronts to delay its spread here for as long as possible.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said Singapore is preparing for the need to move the alert level to red. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has moved to raise the pandemic alert phase for the Mexican swine flu outbreaks from Phase 4 to Phase 5.

The change indicates that there is human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one region.

In Singapore, its hospitals have already enhanced their infection control measures. For example, healthcare workers are already donning full personal protective equipment, especially in high-risk areas such as the emergency department and intensive care unit.

To reduce risk of exposure, triaging of patients has also been introduced at emergency departments, polyclinics and outpatient clinics. Elective admissions have also been reduced to increase hospital capacity.

Under the orange alert state, infection control measures will be further stepped up. Temperature screening and screening for flu-like symptoms for visitors to clinical care areas would be implemented, while hospital staff are required to don personal protection equipment in all areas with patient contact.

The number of visitors would also be restricted to one visitor per patient. This will help facilitate contact tracing and reduce unnecessary risk exposure in the hospitals.

MOH statement said those with a travel history to Mexico over the past seven days will be quarantined for seven days on their return to Singapore and undergo phone surveillance for symptoms for Mexican swine flu.

Those who develop symptoms will be referred to the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC) for a thorough assessment. A dedicated ambulance service (993) has been activated to convey such patients to CDC.

Should evidence arise that other countries besides Mexico are exporting cases, the MOH will also consider imposing similar conditions for travellers returning from those areas.

The statement added that members of the public who are returning from other affected areas like New York, California, Kansas and Texas in the United States and the state of Nova Scotia in Canada are advised to stay at home for seven days upon return and check themselves for symptoms for Mexican swine flu.

They should practise social distancing and refrain from joining mass gatherings such as going to the cinemas, shopping malls or supermarkets.

Those who develop respiratory illness with fever of more than 38 degrees Celsius within seven days after their return should put on a surgical mask, call 993 for an ambulance. They should also disclose their travel histories to their doctors.

MOH is encouraging schools, workplaces and places of mass gathering to conduct temperature checks routinely. Those with a higher-than-normal temperature should be advised to seek treatment immediately.

Recording of all information of all visitors, including the date and time of visit, personal particulars and contact number of visitors, is recommended. This will facilitate contact tracing when the need arises.

Although there are no human cases of Mexican swine flu in Singapore, there have been 22 cases in total referred for further medical assessment. Of these, 19 cases have been tested negative for Influenza A.

Two tested positive for usual circulating seasonal strains of Influenza A and one is pending laboratory investigations.

As for travelling to Mexico, MOH said members of the public are strongly advised to postpone or avoid non-essential travel to Mexico and affected areas.

In the event that travel is unavoidable, the public is advised to take precautionary measures such as avoiding crowded areas and maintaining high standards of personal hygiene at all times – washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially after contact with respiratory secretions.

Those who are unwell with respiratory illness should stay at home and wear a surgical mask if possible. The ministry added that it is monitoring the situation closely and will update the public should there be any new developments.

For more information on Mexican swine flu, members of the public can access MOH's website at www.moh.gov.sg or call its hotline at 1800-333 9999.

Health Guidelines from Qur'an And Sunnah

The Qur'an is not a book of medicine or of health sciences, but in it there are hints which lead to guidelines in health and diseases. Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him) has been sent as an example to mankind so his traditions in matters of health and personal hygiene are also a guide for his followers.

We start our discussion with the following verse: "Everything good that happens to you (O Man) is from God, everything bad that happens to you is from your own actions". (Qur'an 4:79).

The human body can be compared to some degree with a machine created by man. The fascinating tape recorder has many mechanical and electronic parts but life does not come to it till an electrical current is passed through.

Similarly, in the components of the human body there are the anatomic parts and fluids but also the spirit (the soul). As the care of a machine requires keeping it clean, giving it some rest, and passing electricity of proper voltage, and using it carefully and wisely, so are there requirements for the body and of the body as a whole.

Before we come to the physical care of human body, let us talk about the spiritual care. The spiritual care involves the acts of worship. The problem is that Iman (faith) cannot be translated into belief, nor Salaat into prayer, Nor Wudu into washing hands, face and feet nor; Sawm into fasting nor Zakat into charity nor Hajj into pilgrimage to Mecca.

A. Iman:

Belief in God is the first and foremost important need for spiritual stability. Belief in God includes belief in His attributes, His angels, His books, the Day of Judgment, the Heaven and Hell and belief that - all good and bad is within His reach.

Imam Rumi has called faith being superior to prayers. In illness, according to Imam Ghazali, the awareness of God increases and man becomes closer to God by realizing his own weakness.

Without true belief, neither our prayer, nor charity, nor fasting nor pilgrimage will be accepted. The essence of belief is to rid ourselves of all false gods around us, or within us, and to worship no one except God alone.

B. Salat: There are three health aspects of Salat:

I. Wudu: Washing all the exposed areas of the body, hand, feet, face, mouth, nostrils etc. 5 times a day is a healthy preventive procedure. Hand washing is being emphasized more and more in hospitals now in order to prevent the spread of germs. However, non-Muslims did not know that handwashing is so important - it has been ordered in Qur'an (5:7) 1400 years ago. And for complete cleanliness bathing is advised (4:43).

2. Recitation of Qur'an:

This has a healing effect on the body, mind and heart. These healing effects are due to the effect of sound (echo) and the meaning. The letter Alif resounds unto the echoes to heart and the letter YA resounds unto echoes to the pineal gland in the brain.

The movements in Salat are mild, uniform, and involve all muscles and joints. The caloric output is desired to keep the energy balance.

C. Zakat (Charity):

The word itself means purification and growth. Here it is meant to imply the purification of legitimately earned wealth. Many of our crimes are committed with money or for the love of money, and in the love of money one becomes violent in behavior. "And he is violent in his love of wealth" (Qur'an 100:8).

In Islam the ownership of wealth belongs to God. We are the disposers of that trust. Therefore, this concept establishes peace at heart and our behavior in the loss of money or unusual gain. In either way, we thank God.

D. Sawm:

The Islamic fasting: Islamic fasting is prescribed as way training of our mind and body in self-restraints. "O you who believe fasting is prescribed to you, as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you can learn self-restraint." (Qur'an 2:183).

Therefore, during the period of fast one may not only get rid of nibbling food, coffee, smoking but also of anger and excessive sexual passion. In fact, the fast not only gives rest to the stomach but also stabilizes the secretion of hormones which control our behavior.

E. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah):

The moral is Prophet lbrahim 's submission and absolute surrender to God's will, the opportunity for repentance, and the social and political gathering of the Ummah depicting brotherhood and equality.

However, this can be used for programming and testing us for physical endurance, a requirement for all able men and women. The long walks, the heat, the sun, the thirst, the physical exercise, etc. is to remind us of the Day of Judgment.

We should perform Hajj when we are young and physically well rather than wait for old age. We should keep ourselves in good shape before and after the Hajj. After describing the pillars of faith as a basis for the spiritual health, let us talk about the maintenance of the physical structure in which the spirit resides.

(A) Nutrition:

Allah loves His creations so much that He is concerned even with what we eat and put in our body.

Our muscles, bones, lungs, liver, brain and secretions are made from the raw product we feed it. If we provide the factory with junk raw products, the factory will not produce tough bones, strong muscles, good pump (heart) and clean pipes (vessels). "O mankind: Eat of what is lawful and good on earth" (Qur'an 2: 168).

Forbidden to us are dead meat, blood and flesh of swine (see Qur'an 5:3) and intoxicants (Qur'an 5:91, 92, and 2:219).

The blood and meat of the dead could be full of germs and other harmful elements like antibodies. Pork meat is high in cholesterol, salt and may have worms, and alcohol and other intoxicants that cloud our inhibition and interfere with our normal capacity of judging good and bad.

Therefore, a person under the influence of alcohol may want to take off his dress, engage in unlawful sexual acts, become violent and abusive without even knowing what he is doing. On medical damages due to alcohol, whole books have been written.

The second component in nutrition (after permission of the lawful and probation of the unlawful) is the moderation in the lawful.

Obesity is a major American tragedy, a form of malnutrition, affecting millions of people, of all age. Ninety-nine percent of obesity is due to overeating. Allah advises as to be moderate in quantity. "But waste not by excess for God loves not the wasters" (Qur'an 7:31).

Certain types of food i.e. fruits are especially emphasized in Qur'an (36:57, 43:73, 16:67) "And from the fruits of date palm and grapes you get wholesome drink and nutrition: Behold in this is a sign for those who are wise" (Qur'an 16:67).

Fruits are low in calories, high in vitamins and minerals, and fiber and sugar is fructose and not sucrose. In a recent study by Dr. Anderson fructose has been shown to cause no rise in blood sugar and even lowers the high blood sugar of diabetics. Honey is fructose.

(B) Cleanliness:

Allah is pure and likes purity. He is clean and likes cleanliness. Therefore, cleanliness of body and mind is stressed in Qur'an (4:43). Miswak (brushing teeth) is not a new invention of last 200 years. This was stressed as part of our daily routine by Prophet Mohammed.

He also advised us on flossing (Takhlil) as is now being advised by all the dentist. In fact, he is known to have said that if it was not a hardship for Muslims, he would have advised using Miswak before each prayer i.e. five times a day.
Cleanliness of our mind is prerequisite for total cleanliness (body and mind).

(C) The Value of exercise in maintaining health

Though we do not find much in Qur'an about specific exercise, recommendation, the Prophet's life was full of recommendations.

He, himself used to walk at a fast pace, even race with his wife, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

Most importantly, he used to work with his hands whether at home, in the kitchen, or with his companions collecting wood for fire, fighting during wars etc.

It is a pity that Muslim men and women have become sedentary and, because of the excessive consumption of starches, obesity has crept into them. We should keep ourselves fit to go for Jihad and feel healthy in peacetime.

The State of disease

Many of the common chronic illnesses (i.e. coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, peptic ulcer disease, obesity and depression) also have a common man-made etiology, that is rich food, too much food, too much salt, too much sugar, smoking, stress and alcoholism.

If we give up excessive salt, sugar and cholesterol from our diet, and do not drink and smoke, and stay active, it is possible that the pump (the heart) won't be rusted from inside.

What should a Muslim do when disease is confirmed?

A. Accept it as a will of God as Kaffara (expiation) for his sin, and ask him to remove the affliction. "And if God touches thee with affliction, none can remove it but He: if He touches thee with happiness He has power over all things." (Qur'an 6:17).

B. Many Muslims won't seek early medical attention, contrary to the Prophet's practice and teaching. In Christianity there is a sect believing in faith healing who have let their members die rather than go to the physician.

Usamah Bin Shareek (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: "I was with the Prophet and some Arabs came to him asking "O Messenger of Allah, do we take medicine for any disease." He said, "Yes, O you servants of Allah! Take medicine as Allah has not created a disease without creating a cure except for one. They asked which one, he replied old age'.

C. Increase your knowledge of health and disease, of medications and side effects. This knowledge is not the monopoly of doctors. You can have it and use it in preventing the illness, recognizing it early when symptoms appear, seeking early medical attention, then monitoring the course of the disease, implementing the treatment (i.e. knowledge of diet for diabetics) and recognizing side effects of the medicine.

In summary, our healthy bodies is a gift from God. We are the trustees. We should not misuse it, nor provide wrong raw products for the factory and we should keep superb maintenance of this delicate and sensitive machine, in order to enjoy it. It is the container of our soul.

Do ablution properly...take precaution

Global Update

1 As at 27 April 09, there are reportedly 18 confirmed cases of human swine influenza A (H1N1 viruses) in Mexico, 20 in the United States (New York City, California, Texas, Kansas and Ohio), and 6 in Canada (Nova Scotia and British Columbia). There are also reports of suspected human cases in a number of countries such as New Zealand, Scotland, Israel, Spain, Brazil and Columbia. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that the outbreak of the new strain of human swine influenza in Mexico and the US constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), and has recommended that countries intensify its surveillance and precautionary measures. The US has also declared a public health emergency to deal with the emerging human swine influenza. These reports raise concerns about a global human-to-human spread of a novel influenza virus.

Situation in Singapore

2 As of 27 April 09, there are no cases of human swine flu in Singapore. There are two cases referred to CDC for further assessment. One of them is an American from California picked up for higher-than-normal temperature by thermal screening at Changi Airport. The other is a local resident who had a travel history to the United States and flu-like symptoms, who presented himself at the polyclinic and was referred to the CDC. Preliminary tests for Influenza A for both were negative.

3 MOH is monitoring the situation closely and will update the public should there be any new developments.

Precautionary Measures implemented

4 All healthcare institutions in Singapore have stepped up their infectious disease control measures to handle cases turning up at their hospitals. As a good practice, some hospitals have advised their staff at critical areas such as the Emergency Departments (EDs) and Intensive Care Units to don full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

5 There is a system of triage in the EDs where symptomatic patients with a travel history to affected areas, or contact with such persons, will be isolated within the hospitals. At the outpatient setting, for example, at GPs, polyclinics and TCM clinics, there is also a system where such cases will be referred to TTSH ED for further assessment.

6 As part of national level measures, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) implemented precautionary measures at Singapore Changi Airport yesterday night. Thermal scanners have been deployed at the Arrival Halls to measure the temperature of passengers just before they undergo immigration checks. These precautionary checks are non-intrusive and have no impact on the time needed by passengers to clear the various airport processes. Flights in and out of Changi Airport are continuing as normal. Passengers with a higher-than-normal temperature will undergo a more thorough medical assessment. If the doctor-on-duty ascertains the passenger requires further testing, the passenger will be conveyed to the CDC.

Advice from MOH

7 Members of the public are advised to postpone or avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. In the event that travel to Mexico is unavoidable, the public is advised to take precautionary measures such as avoiding crowded areas, coming into contact with sick persons and maintaining high standards of personal hygiene at all times.

8 Members of the public are also advised to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms of swine flu within seven days of travel to California, Texas, Kansas, New York City and Ohio in USA or to Mexico. They should also disclose their travel histories to their doctors.

9 Locally, the ministry would like to advise hospital visitors to limit or postpone their trips to the hospitals where possible. The public should also maintain high standards of personal hygiene, such as washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially after contact with respiratory secretions (e.g. after sneezing and coughing). Those who are sick with respiratory illnesses should avoid crowded areas and wear masks if possible.

Thats why I love...

Mahatma Gandhi, speaking on the character of Muhammad, peace be upon him, says in 'Young India':

"I wanted to know the best of one who holds today undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind... I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid ... Read more simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life."

Muslim with 7 years old son commiting suicide

HIS wife was expecting him to buy biryani for lunch after he had fetched their son from school.

TRAGIC: Investigators looking at the father's body. --TNP PICTURES: FRANCIS LEE
Instead, the unexpected happened. Her husband, 35, and their only child, 7, fell to their deaths from the 24th floor of Block 287 in Bukit Batok East Avenue 3 at 1.55pm yesterday.

Witnesses said the boy, Faheem Mohamed Farook, fell first, followed by his father, Mr Mohamed Farook Ali Akbar.

Pooja Punniyamoorthy, 11, was changing out of her school uniform when she saw a figure falling from the upper levels of her housing block.

Moments later, the Primary 5 pupil saw another figure plunging.

Speaking to The New Paper outside her third-floor flat, Pooja said: 'At first, I thought the figures were black plastic bags that were thrown down.

'But I heard loud thuds and when I came out of my flat, I saw two bodies on the concrete ground.'

Mrs Alice Ng, 54, a housewife who lives on the eighth floor of Block 271, which faces Block 287, said: 'I was doing my laundry when I saw policemen talking to the man. The cops appeared to be trying to calm the man down.

'I thought a TV station was filming a show so I returned to my chore. Seconds later, I heard a loud thud and I realised it was a real tragedy.'

Others thought it was an object being thrown down, until they heard loud thuds.

It is believed that Mr Mohd Farook threw his son down before taking his own life.

Family friend Bakar Ismail, 62, who runs a butcher shop in the neighbourhood, told The New Paper that Mr Mohd Farook had taken leave from work yesterday to see his son's form teacher.

Mr Bakar said he heard from the wife that the son's teacher tore his shirt to punish him for quarrelling with a classmate.

He said: 'Her husband wanted to settle the matter with the teacher before going for prayers in the mosque.'

The boy is said to be studying in a government primary school in the area.

The family came here from India in 2000 and became permanent residents, said Mr Bakar.

He added that the wife is a homemaker and Mr Mohd Farook worked in a hospital lab.

'He told his wife not to cook lunch. He would buy biryani after prayers in the mosque.'

No answer

But at 2.30pm, when Mr Mohd Farook did not answer his handphone, she began panicking, said Mr Bakar.

She went round the neighbourhood shops looking for her husband and son. When she saw their bodies at the foot of Block 287, she broke down, said Mr Bakar.

'The police were already there and the bodies were covered with white sheets.

'She wanted to have a closer look at the bodies but the police stopped her.'

Another resident, Mr Mohd Sham, 56, a security officer, said: 'The wife shouted the names of her husband and son as she walked towards the scene.'

A police car then drove her to a station where she spent the rest of the day giving her statement.

The New Paper understands that the dead man's younger brother, who also works in Singapore, gave a police statement yesterday.

At 5.30pm, undertakers arrived to take the bodies away. Mr Bakar said Mr Mohd Farook had told his wife last week that he would transfer all his properties in India to her.

Madam Saminah, 52, a retired teacher who lives on the fifth floor in Block 287, said she heard a woman crying but did not think something was amiss.

She said: 'My daughter heard a thud while she was bathing. She then made her way to the community library.

'After she went downstairs, she called me, saying two persons fell to their deaths.'

The family was known in the neighbourhood.

A barber who asked to be known as Sam said Mr Mohd Farook was a happy-go-lucky man.

Sam, 52, said: 'I last saw him two weeks ago when he asked me to cut his hair.'

A police spokesman told The New Paper that father and son were pronounced dead by paramedics at 2.15pm.

Due to the economical crisis, alot of ppl are facing a lot of stress..with loans to pay and housing expenses and water and electricity expenses, these drive ppl to the edge. As a member of a society and a muslim, we MUST extend help to PPL who are in need of our help. We all have to answer to ALLAH(SWT) one day for all the deeds that we do.

Ok this makes me sick!

LONDON (AFP) - - The father of "Slumdog Millionaire" child actress Rubina Ali tried to sell his nine-year-old daughter for adoption in a bid to escape the Mumbai slums, a British newspaper said Sunday.

News of the World alleged that Rafiq Qureshi wanted 20 million rupees (400,000 dollars, 310,000 euros) for the girl, who played the young Latika in the British hit film set in India.

"Slumdog Millionaire", a rags-to-riches tale of children from the slums of Mumbai, won eight Oscars in February, including the best picture Academy Award.

News of the World said its reporters posed as a wealthy family from Dubai, employing its regular "fake sheikh" sting tactic.

The weekly tabloid said a Mumbai informant told them that Qureshi was touting for the highest offer, having already been approached by a Middle Eastern family.

The newspaper published pictures of the actress, her father and uncle posing with their undercover reporter, plus video clips of Qureshi and his brother-in-law during their meeting last week.

"Yes, we are considering Rubina's future," Qureshi was quoted as saying.

He put the reporter in touch with his brother-in-law Rajan More.

"We are interested in securing our girl's future," the star's uncle was quoted as saying.

"If you wanted to adopt we could discuss this, but her parents would also expect some proper compensation in return.

"Whatever money is agreed by Rajan, I will accept.

"We can discuss everything about this deal when we meet. There's a lot of interest in Rubina."

Qureshi, Ali, More and some other relatives met the British reporters in a Mumbai hotel, the newspaper said.

"We need two or three months," Qureshi allegedly said. More added: "Until then we can negotiate the amount. We'll come to Dubai, the girl will come and go."

"It's 20 million rupees," the uncle was quoted as saying.

"This discussion will not go beyond the three of us."

Qureshi proudly carried Ali through the Mumbai slums in February after she returned from the Oscar glory of Hollywood.

It takes years to know why Allah prohibits Pork. (proven)

" Forbidden to you for (food) are: dead meat,
blood and the flesh of the swine and that
which hath been invoked the name other than
Allah. " ( Holy Qur'an 5:4 )

Such prohibition is also found in the Bible:

" The pig also because it is a splitter of the
hoof but there is no cud. It is unclean for
you. None of their flesh must you eat and carcass
you must not touch. "
Deuteronomy 14:8 ( Bible)

Islam ( an Arabic word which means submission to the will
of the Almighty God) has laid down the foundation for the best
approach in keeping good health. In the Holy Qur'an (The Last
Testament ) God exhorts the believers to select the best food and
to stay away from any harmful food to maintain good health:

" Let him find out which is the best food
( to be had ) ... Eat of the best foods We
have provided for you . "

( Holy Qur'an 18:19;7:160 )

The main purpose of a True Religion must be to build an ideal
community in this world ; a religion that promotes moral,
political and economic well;social harmony and peace, as well as
good health of its believers or followers.
Health means the physical and mental well-being and freedom
from diseases and pain. There are several passages in the Bible,
articulating that because of sin ( a transgression of the law of
God) God afflicted human beings with maladies (Ps.103:3;Exodus
15:26 and Psalms 107:16-20).Islamic instructions and teachings
espousing health consciousness have scriptural and scientific
support

MEDICAL ASPECT OF THE PROHIBITION

Abstention from eating pork is a measure to safeguard
health.Of all the domestic animals, pig is the most
avaricious, eating anything including human excreta. It is the
cradle of harmful germs and parasites. Its meat is carrier of
diseases to man, thus making it unfit for human consumption.

CHARACTER OF PIG

All types of animals are lawful to be eaten whether those
living on land or in the water except those animals specifically
forbidden in the Holy Writings revealed by the Almighty Creator
and the sayings of the Prophet with clear and well defined
injunctions.

Pig belong to the forbidden animals, and not allowed to be
eaten by the believers. Pig eats almost anything dirty and they
are very lazy animals. It is the most avaricious of all domestic
animals. Amongst all animals, pig is the cradle of harmful germs.
It's meat serves as carrier of diseases to mankind. It is this
very reason that made it unfit for human consumption consumption.

DISEASES CAUSED BY PORK

The following lists show germs or parasites that are found
in pork and some diseases caused by them. Many of these
diseases are contagious while some are proven fatal. This proves
that the more science advances the more Islam is shown correct
as a religion of God.

PARASITIC DISEASES

a) TRICHINELLA SPIRATIS ( Trichina worms )
It is the most dangerous parasite to man ( Rheumatism and
muscular pain). The infected persons shown no symptoms, recover
very slowly some die, some reduced to permanent invalids. No one
is immune from this disease and there is no cure.

b) TAENIA SOLIUM ( Pork tape worm )
The worm causes malnourishment of the person leading
to anemia, diarrhea, extreme depression melancholia and
digestive disturbances. Cysticercosis means that larva enter
the blood stream then settle down in one or more of the vital
organs of the body, for example: brain, liver, lungs or spinal
cord. They grow and encapsulate, inducing pressure to the
system around, resulting in dangerous diseases (diarrhea,
digestive disorder, anemia, chronic invalidation).

c) ROUND WORMS
Examples: Ascaris, which may lead to digestive
disturbances, appendicitis, obstructive jaundice.

d) HOOK WORMS
Examples:Ancylostomiasis, which may lead to
anaemia, oedema, heart failure or retarded growth ( mental and
physical), tuberculosis, diarrhoea and typhoid.

e) SCHITOSOMA JAPONICUM
Bleeding, anemia and other syndromes. If ova are settled in the
brain or spinal cord, paralysis and death may occur.

f) PARAGOMINES WESTERMAINI
Infestation leading to bleeding of the lungs ( endenve haemoptysis)

g) PACIOLEPSIS BUSKI
Digestive disturbances leading to persistent diarrhea;
generalized oedema.

h) CLONORCHIS SINENSIS
chlonorchiasis-obstructive jaundice, liver enlargement.

i) METASTRONGYLUS APRI
Causes bronchitis, abscess of the lungs.

j) GIGANTHORINCHUS GIGAS
Cause anaemia and digestive disorders.

k) BALATITIDIUM COLI
Causes acute dysentery and general weakness.

BACTERIAL DISEASES

1. Tuberculosis
2. Fusiformis necrofurus: causing foot-rot which is very
difficult to heal.
3. Salmonella Cholera suis: causing cholera
4. Paratyphoid
5. Bruceellosis: Acute, sub acute and chronic. It may lead
to permanent disabilities.
6. Swine Erysipelas: causing Erypelas in man.

Viral Diseases

1. Small pox: is was a source of infection to man.
2. Japanese B-encepphalitis: It is the source of infection
3. Influenza, foot mouth disease, gas tro-enteritis of the
new born babies.

Protozoal Diseases :

Toxo plasma goundii- It is a very dangerous disease.
A new born baby of an infected woman may die within few days or weeks after delivery. But if he survives, he may develop blindness or deafness. In adult chronic exhaustive fever with enlarged liver and spleen may occur. Pneumonia, or
celebro- spinal meninggitis which may lead to death or madness.
The patient may become blind and deaf too.

Fats In Pigs:

Pork contains more fats than other meats.

Therefore, people who are fond of pork are more obese than
others. Cholesterol is higher in their blood thus making them
more prone to asthereosclerosis cardiovascular accidents and
sudden death.

Other Diseases :

Flesh of the pork is hard to digest and may lead to chronic digestive disturbances. Pimples, boils, cysts are common in pork eaters. These are some of the parasites and diseases found in pork and/ or the skin of pigs and certainly there are many more. There is still no means of killing these
parasites, in the tissues, neither has anyone found a method of
expelling them, even produced any specific treatment for the
diseases.

BIBLICAL ASPECT OF THE PROHIBITION

Old Testament

The Jews and the different christian sects and denominations
believe in the Old Testament. Adherents of other religions
alleged that the prohibition was already superseded by the New
Testament. This cogent argumentation is inconclusive. No one can
specifically point out that Jesus Christ (PBUH) lifted the
prohibition. On the contrary, he upheld it he declared:

" Think not that I have come to abolish the law
and the prophets: I have come not to abolish
them but to fulfill them." (Matthew 5:17 RSV)

Jesus Christ (PBUH) was obviously referring to the existing
Law of his time , the Mosaic Law !- in which the Law prohibiting
pig as article of food is mentioned. ( Leviticus 11:7-11)

" As for any beast that is a splitter of the hoof
but is not a former of the cleft and not a chewer
of the cud, they are unclean for you. Everyone
touching them will be unclean. "
Leviticus 11:26

In addition, the book of Prophet Isaiah said:

" Who sit in tombs, and spend the night in secret
places who eats swine's flesh and broth of
abominable things is in their vessels;... These
are a smoke in my nostrils,a fire that burns
all the day. " ( Isaiah 65:4,5b RSV)

The New Testament

Despite the Biblical injunction prohibiting pork as food,
still people of other religious persuations insist on finding
ways and reasons to justify their consumption of prohibited
animals arguing that said Biblical prohibition was already
superseded in the New Testament when in certainly, no one can
specifically point out that Jesus Christ (PBUH) indeed lifted the
prohibition. On the contrary, Jesus (PBUH) declared:

" Think not that I have come to abolish the law
and the prophets. I have come not to abolish but
to fulfill them. " ( Matthew 5:17 )

The fact is, we will find in Mark 5:1-20 that Jesus (PBUH)
even permitted the foul spirits (evil spirits) possessing a man
to enter into the herb of swine. Since the flesh of pig is
unlawful for the Jews, to eat and since it is considered
unclean, (Leviticus 11:7-8) consequently, the Jews are not to keep
or raise them. This Biblical account states that Jesus (PBUH)
punished the owners of the swine;destroyed their unlawful
livelihood and at the same time showed that pig is the habitat of
unclean spirits.

The only provision in the New Testament alluded to their
argument is in Act 10:10-16. Without reading the whole
context, one would be inclined to interpret it to mean that God
abrogated His previous command found on Deuteronomy 14:3-8. An
alleged apparition of Peter on Acts 10:11-16 is alleged to
supersede Deuteronomy 14:3-8, however, nowhere in the Bible is it
mentioned that Peter actually slaughtered and ate the unclean
animals he saw in his apparition. The correct interpretation of
this apparition was shown to him in Acts 10:25-28. Acts 10:11-16
therefore, carries an allegorical connotation,r eferring
explicitly to the Gentile nations or non-Jewish nations. Peter
was told not to call the Gentiles common and unclean because
God's mercy, blessing and forgiveness also encompasses the Non
Jews and life eternal also awaits the penitent.

In the Bible, Jesus(PBUH) likened to a dog and pig those
people whom after receiving divine teaching failed to profit from
them and abuses them for self-serving purposes:

" Do not give holy to dogs- they will only turn and
attack you. Do not throw your pearls in front of
pigs-they will only trample them underfoot. "
( Matthew 7:6 NEB)

The New Heavens And The New Earth

The book of Isaiah 66:1-24, is an oracle of the new
heavens and the new earth prepared for the believers. Within
the context, God condemns people's practices such as eating the
flesh of pigs, reptiles, and rats.

" Those who sanctify and purify themselves
to go into the gardens, following one in
the midst, eating swine's flesh and the
abomination and mice, shall come to an
end together says the LORD. "
(Isaiah 67:17 RSV)

Therefore, the prohibition on the eating of unclean
animals was not abrogated during t he New Testament times.God
will still punish the transgressors in the fire that will never
quench. This will occur during the new heavens and the new earth.

MUSLIMS FOLLOW THE DIVINE LAW

Last Testament's Verdict On Prohibition Of Pork

Islam means" submission to the will and command of God "
and a person who embraced this religion is called " Muslim "
which means " one who accepts and submits himself to the will of
God.A Muslim is obliged to be clean both spiritually, mentally
and physically. Abstention from eating flesh of swine is one of
the obligation a Muslim must observe to attain purity of the
soul and of the human nature. The believers in Islam, sincerely
believe in the Holy Qur'an as the Word of God, revealed to
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which says:

" Allah has forbidden you only what dies of itself
and blood and the flesh of swine and that over
which any other name than that of Allah has been
invoked; but whoever is driven to (it), not
desiring nor exceeding the limit, then surely
Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. " ( 16:115 )

We should bear in our mind that the abstention from eating
pork by the Muslims is based on hygienic grounds and of the
cultivation of purity of character. Pork is not poisonous as to
kill people right on the spot but latent. It will destroys
slowly. It is certainly not as nourishing as any other meat and
it causes prolonged sufferings. Pondering on the wisdom of this
saying: "Health is wealth " will lead you to better living and
prosperity. The last Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

" There are two blessing which many people lose:
health and the free time for doing good ...The
stronger believer (in health) is more blessed
and more beloved to Allah than the weak
believer. "

This is how we look when we slander, gossip and backbit

"She is fat", "She is ugly"

Th worst of all sins are those that are greatest in harm and danger to humanity. Among the destructive major sins are backbiting and slandering.

These two sins are forbidden by Allah because they sow enmity, evils and discord among people and lead to destruction. They cause hostilities between people of the same household and between neighbors and relatives. They can decrease in good deeds and increase in evil ones and lead to dishonor and ignominy.

Backbiting (gheebah) means mentioning something about a person (in his absence), that he hates (to have mentioned), whether it is about: His body, his religious characteristics, his worldly affairs, his self, his physical appearance, his character, his wealth, his child, his father, his wife, his manner of walking, his smile, it is the same whether you mention that about him with words, through writings, or whether you point or indicate him by gesturing with your eyes, hand or head.

As for the body, is when you make fun of how someone looks, or mentioning any bad quality in him, as saying: "he is blind", "he limps", "he is bleary-eyed", "he is bald", "he is short", "he is tall", "he is black", "he is yellow", "he's too thin", "he's too fat". As for his religious qualities, it is when you say: "he is a sinner", "he is a thief", "he is a betrayer", "he is an oppressor", "he doesn't pray", "he prays so fast", "he does not behave well towards his parents", "he does not pay the Zakat duly"." As for the worldly matters, then it is when you say: "he has poor manners", "he does not think that anyone has a right over him", "he talks too much" …etc

O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear God, verily, God is the one who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. (49: 12)

Prophet Muhammad said :"Do you know what backbiting is?" They said, "God and His Messenger know best." He then said, "It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike." Someone asked him, "But what if what I say is true?" The Messenger of God said, "If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him." Review: Selective abortion causes 32mln excess China males

This news article reminded me of the atrocity done to the innocent girls all around the world due to ignorance. That what happened to early people before Islam came. From the article, Alhamduillah. Xinjiang has no problem with this imbalance as the place has plenty of muslims.

The Quran also indicate towards parents who killed their children will be the losers.

"Thus have their (so called partners of Allah) made the killing of their killing of children to seem fair to many of the idolaters that they may ruin them and make their faith obscure for them. (6:138)

"They are the losers who besottedly have slain their children without knowledge."(6:141)

"Kill not your children for fear of poverty. It is We who provide for them and for you. Sure the killing of them is a great sin. (17:13)

People aborted their children due to the fear that they will add to their financial worries and make their lives more miserable. These parents thought their children as an unnecessary burden upon their shoulders as they would have been fed, clothed and looked after by them.

In most cultures, it seems that having a son is a world of joys and celebrations, while having a daughter becomes like an embarrassment.

Children are the gifts from Allah(swt) whether it is a son or daughter. It is a duty of a man who receives any of these gifts to be highly grateful to Him.

The prophet(pbuh) said, " When a female child is born, Allah(swt) sends His angels to that hourse. They come to the dwellers of that house and pray that may be upon them. The angel then cover the newborn girl under the shadow of their wings and caressing the head of the baby with their hands, say that his is a weak and fragile person who is given brith by a weak and frail person. Whoever will bear the responsibility of her cherishment will go on having the blessings of Allah(swt) as long as that person remains alive. (Al Mojam al Saghir li Tabarani)

Once, a man sitting with ABDULLAH BIN UMAR (RA), he has several daughters. He said in anguish, " I wish all my daughters are dead.". Abdullah bin umar became angry to hear that. He rebuffed the man," Are you their substainer?"

It is most beneficient favours from Allah(swt) that he has honoured us by giving us daughters. He has given us the tidings of heavens. It means He wants us to value the daughters like sons.

We should cherish them and give them the same amount of love, kindness, affection and importances the same as we give to our sons.

We should be more kind and nice in our behavior towards them as they live with us temporarily. They will eventually go their husbands to make their own homes.

Who knows, what sort of treatment they get from the persons with whom they are related after marriage.

We should give them chance to remember our kindness and affections to console themselves in their moments of grief and sorrow if they are mistreated.

For many reaons, our holy prophet (pbuh) mentioned, daughters as "shields" from the fire of Hell and "means" for the entry into the Heavens.

SELECTIVE ABORTION CAUSES 32mln excess China males

AFP - Saturday, April 11
PARIS (AFP) - - Selective abortion in favour of males has left China with 32 million more boys than girls, creating an imbalance that will endure for decades, an investigation released on Friday warned.

The probe provides ammunition for those experts who predict China's obsession with a male heir will sow a bitter fruit as men facing a life of bachelorhood fight for a bride.

"Although some imaginative and extreme solutions have been suggested, nothing can be done now to prevent this imminent generation of excess men," says the paper, published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

In most countries, males slightly outnumber females -- between 103 and 107 male births for every 100 female births.
But in China and other Asian countries, the sex ratio has widened sharply as the traditional preference for boys is reinforced by the availability of cheap ultrasound diagnostics and abortion.

This has enabled Chinese couples to use pregnancy termination to prevent a female birth, a practice that is officially condemned as well as illegal.
In China, an additional factor has been the "one-child" policy.

In general, parents who have a second child are liable to pay a fine and contribute disproportionately towards the child's education.

But in some provinces, a second child is permitted if the first is a girl or if parents are experiencing "hardship." And in a few others, couples are allowed a second child and sometimes a third, regardless of sex.

In the paper, Zhejiang university professors Wei Xing Zhu and Li Lu and Therese Hesketh of University College London found that in 2005 alone, China had more than 1.1 million excess male births.

Among Chinese aged below 20, the greatest gender imbalances were among one-to-four-year-olds, where there were 124 male to 100 female births, with 126 to 100 in rural areas, they found.

The gap was especially big in provinces where the one-child policy was strictly enforced and also in rural areas.

Jiangxi and Henan provinces had ratios of over 140 male births compared to female births in the 1-4 age group.

Among second births, the sex ratio was even higher, at 143 males to 100 female. It peaked at a massive 192 boys to 100 girls in Jiangsu province.

Only two provinces -- Tibet and Xinjiang, the most permissive in terms of the one-child policy -- had normal sex ratios.

"Sex selective abortion accounts for almost all the excess males," the paper said. "(...) Enforcing the existing ban on sex selective abortion could lead to normalisation of ratios."

Other policy options are to loosen enforcement of the one-child policy so that couples can have a second child if the first child is a girl, it said.
The paper does not deal with the social consequences of the extraordinary imbalance, but suggests there are rays of light.

Since since 2000, the government has launched policies aimed at countering the imbalance, with a "care for girls" awareness campaign and reforms of inheritance laws, it says.

Partially as a result, the sex ratio of birth did not change between 2000 and 2005, and in many urban areas, the ratio for the first and usually only birth is now within normal limits.

The figures come from a mini-census in China in 2005, covering one percent of the population, that sought to rectify flaws in a 2000 census. A total of 4.764 million people under the age of 20 were included in the study.
In a commentary, Tao Liu and Xing-yi Zhang of Jilin University said preferences for sons in China were starting to erode with urbanisation and industrialisation.
Social systems, pensions and higher standards of living eased the son's traditional role of caring for his parents.

China could also follow the lead of South Korea, they said.
In 1992, South Korea had "an astounding" 229-to-100 gender imbalance in fourth births among couples, which prompted it to launch a public-awareness campaign combined with strictly enforced laws on gender selection.

By 2004, there were 110 male births to 100 females, compared with 116-100 in 1998.

Parental Rights in Islam

The biggest right over us is that of Allah (swt).

Faith and obedience to Him are our first and foremost duties of these responsibilities of domestic life.

Fulfillment of these responsibilities is a social need as part of the religious duties.

After the above responsibilities, it boils down to the family life which parents are entitled to the highest place and foremost rights.

This can be substantiated by going through the following verses from the Koran.

"Your lord, Allah has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents whether one or both of them attain old age in your life. Say not to them a word of contempt nor repel them but address them in terms of honour and out of kindness lower to them the wing of humility and say," My lord bestow on both of them Your mercy as the cherished me in my childhood." (17:23-24)

The above verses can be interpreted :

  1. Parents' rights are next to the rights of Allah (swt) in Islam.
  2. When parents become old, their temperament is changed. They may become easily irritable and short tempered

due to their age. Children should show considerable patience and magnanimity for their ageing parents.

  3. Parents should be respected and revered throughout all stages of their ages. Particularly when they are old and become

persistent, nagging and critical. The children should all more submissive and tolerant and should always keep in mind the related

    verses from the Koran.

  4. The children should adopt attitude of humbleness, politeness and obedience for their parents. They should readily carry out the orders of parents and also feel comforted by doing so.
  5. We should recall those days of infancy when we were totally dependent on our parents. During that period we were weak and in need of help from the parents to survive. During that time, our parents nourished us with love and affection bearing all sorts of hardships.

They felt happy when we were happy and became restless when we were slightly harmed. We as children should always have these memories fresh in mind and pray to Allah(swt) to be merciful and kind to our parents in their old age as they had been considerate and kind to their own children in their hour of needs.

Importance of parents

Once a man questioned Prophet about the rights of parents upon their children.

He replied that " the parents are the Heaven OR Hell for their children." (ibn-e-majah, mishkat)

It can be interpreted that, one clearly understands in the point of view of the hereafter, he can earn an abode in Heaven by keep the parents happy.

On another hand, he can be a deserving person for Hell if he makes them unhappy by his misbehavior.

"The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of father and the displeasure of Allah lies in the displeasure of father." (tirmizi, hakim)

Nobody can get the pleasure of Allah(swt) without pleasing the parents. One who earns the pleasure of the parents pleases Allah(swt). One who displease the parents may not be saved from His wrath. Both the things are interdependent.

"Go back home and serve her as Heaven was under her feet" told by The prophet to a young man who wanted to participate in the war with him when the prophet realize that the young man still has his living mother.

From this hadith, weknow that mothers must be highly respected, treated politeness and submission and served selflessly by those who want to deliverance on the day of judgement.

The 1st hadith mentioned about father, established the importance of obedience of father while the hadith mentioned about mother, established the worth of obedience to mother.

Keep our angels safe….

Allah's Apostle said, "When night falls (or it is evening), keep your children close to you for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night elapses, you can let them free. Close the doors and mention the Name of Allah, for Shaytaan (Satan) does not open a closed door." — Bukhari 4:523, Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah

In singapore, as for my family, I will call my kids to come home when they are at playground once its 630pm in the evenings.

I only bring them out after mahgrib prayers if there is no urgent matters. I was informed that between 630pm-mahgrib prayer time, this is where the shaytan starts to recruit his "troops". Beware of evil thoughts or actions at these times, remember the following…

a) seek Allah's forgiveness [saying, Astaghfirullah ('I seek Allah's forgiveness')];

b) seek protection from the Shaytan [saying, A`udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ar-rajeem ('I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed shaytan')]

c) cut out the things that result in that bad thought immediately [e.g. shut the window with such images]

d) then thank Allah, wholeheartedly, for enabling you to overcome your desires and shaytan [saying, Alhamdulillah ('All praise is due to Allah')]; this makes Shaytan despair, and strengthens one's resolve.

Dont stop seeking knowledge

There is a website for muslims to think share help. That is the motto for nasibriyani lounge.

It is a strictly english website (thank god!) since i dunno other languages.hehe.
This website allows members to ask questions or anything that they have in their minds. Latest question, I thought its funny! " Help, I've been attacked by Bedbugs."

This website gave the local muslim community a plateform to communicate and share ideas and to voice our opinions. We try not to give fatwa (sometimes cant be helped! ) If we do that, our post get deleted. (dont really like my posts to get deleted) Its freedom of speech!! haha. Like real!

Anyway, I got 4th prize in Nasibriyani lounge Questions and Answers. Thanks to Allah(swt)

Vote for me in nasibriyani lounge ya. I want to be in top 3 this year! haha. inshallah.

Is it wrong for muslimahs for posting their pictures in their profiles?

There is many ways of communications now, facebook, youtube, friendster, blogger and many others. Definitely u can find pictures of muslimahs on them.

I got this question on the nasibriyanilounge.com, I got disturbed.

We muslimahs in today's society needs to work especially in a high standard of living society like Singapore. We cant afford to stay at home and secluded from others especially when you have kids.

Women are allowed to work if there is a need to as long as we work in halal jobs.

U can read my post about modesty in dressing.

As for muslimahs, its up to their choice. We cant judge a person like that. We dont even know them.

GEYLANG SERAI FOOD POISONING

Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, April 7

SINGAPORE :

As the family of the first victim of the Geylang mass food poisoning incident prepare for a funeral, another is keeping a close watch as Noraini Kasim fights for her life at Alexandra Hospital.

The 59—year old who had eaten Indian rojak from the same hawker stall, is now in a coma.

On Monday morning, 57—year—old Madam Aminah Samijo who had been in a coma, died without regaining consciousness after being rushed to the intensive care unit of Changi General Hospital.

The hospital diagnosed the canteen assistant who arrived unconscious, unresponsive and with breathing difficulties, as suffering from Gastroenteritis and septic shock.

The body of Madam Aminah has been handed over to her family at about 12.15pm Tuesday.

Seven family members were at the Singapore General Hospital to claim the body which had undergone an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her death.

The dead woman’s son, 23—year—old Salleh Omar told 938Live that Indian rojak was his mother’s favourite dish and she had patronised weekly the popular stall known as Rojak Geylang Serai.

Mr Salleh said it’s too early to say what action the family will take against the stall owner as the family is concentrating on the funeral.

Speaking at the family flat in Eunos Crescent, Madam Aminah’s daughter, Siti, said her mum who will be greatly missed was well—liked and a great cook.

Apart from Mdm Aminah, another member of the family, her younger brother Ahmad Samijo, also came down with food poisoning after eating from the stall last Wednesday.

He managed to recover from the bout through outpatient treatment.

In all, the Health Ministry has received 111 reports of food poisoning linked to the Rojak Geylang Serai stall at the Geylang Serai Temporary Market.

The victims include a 38—year—old housewife, Rosiah Samat who received a special treat of Indian rojak from her husband on Friday.

The mother—to—be who ended up with food poisoning also suffered a miscarriage.

So far 27 people have had to be hospitalised, while the rest received outpatient treatment at various emergency departments for symptoms that includes severe abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Preliminary investigations show the cases to be associated with the food from the stall which has been ordered to be closed after being inspected by the Health Ministry and National Environment Agency (NEA).

The stallholder and his assistant have been told to undergo screening for food borne pathogens at the Communicable Disease Centre while other stalls in the area have undergone a hygiene inspection.

The precautionary measure by the NEA has found that the other food stalls are satisfactory and stallholders were reminded to keep up a high standard of food and personal hygiene.

Are you tired of life?

We passed by the void deck of the next block, we saw broken tiles and a big hole and blood on the floor.

Immediately my habibi said someone must have commited suicide.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un [Arabic: انّا للہ و انّا الیہ راجعون ]

Due to the economic recession, there is a rise of people committing suicide. People loses their jobs, creditors asking for debts, banks calling, family expenses, etc. Many times we all cant take it.

To us muslims, we do not commit suicide as we know life after death, the dwelling will be in hell fire.

We also understand, that in life, these are all trials and tribulations we humans go through in order to rise our ranks in the sight of Allah. We turn to Allah for his help, we pray more that in turn increases our iman (faith) in him. All prophets have been through worst situations and even the four imans are also went through alot in their lives in order to attain the greatness.

Has not Allah (swt) says, and it is possible that you hate something and it is for your good? [surah al baqarah, verse 216]

Allah knows best!
